At the end of July last year, I had the joy and pleasure of moving from Cape Town, South Africa, all the way to Kyoto City, Japan. I was accepted to work as an Assistant Language Teacher, teaching English as a second language to senior high school students in Kyoto.
Moving your entire life to a whole different continent, that does not have English as a first language, is no easy task. And as a result, my art has fallen behind me as I spent the last few months trying to find my feet again in this strange yet wonderful country.
But now I am back! I have bought furniture for my minikiki studio, and am getting myself all set up again. I feel inspired to create daily, as many things that I see here are new, interesting, delightful, ugly, and sometimes comedic. I have felt a burst of fresh inspiration to get creative, get moving, and experiment to my heart's content. Perhaps this new inspiration has something to do with the seasonal change to Spring, and the beautiful new peach, plum and cherry blossoms starting to peep out of hiding from the long and depressing Winter we've had.
So here's to creativity. To expressing your heart and soul, simply for the joy and pleasure of the act.
In the words of the wildly popular 'Engrish' that is spoken in Japan: "Let's art!"
